bol.com is the Netherlands’ number one online retail store, with 3.4 million active customers. bol.com’s convenient e-commerce platform presents customers with over 30 million products.

In 2010, bol.com realized it needed to replace its catalog system, which stored more than 250 attributes on every product and managed a range of automated supplier connections. The company needed to establish a trusted, single source of product data, decrease time and effort required to add product information from new suppliers and add new product categories faster. bol.com looked for a stable, robust and scalable platform, as its product portfolio was expected to grow significantly. Flexibility, performance and functionality were also key. bol.com wanted to find a supplier with which it could develop a long-term relationship.

In looking for a solution, bol.com was mainly concerned with product information management (PIM) and hadn’t considered master data management (MDM). As the company began to review available PIM solutions, they became aware of Stibo Systems as a provider of both PIM and MDM solutions—a unique selling point. Because bol.com uses various IT systems (including ATG and Endeca), it was crucial that the chosen platform be easy to integrate. During the RFP stage, some of the short-listed solution providers had issues with integration, while Stibo Systems proved that its solution was able to feed directly into bol.com’s IT architecture.

bol.com implemented STEP in 2010 and went live with its largest product category, Books, in 2011. Using STEP, the entire category’s product data was streamlined and updated to operate in near real-time, providing customers with availability and shipping data. With STEP, the time needed to on-board and deliver content to the web was reduced from two months to two weeks. Following the implementation of STEP, bol.com saw an increase in fulfillment rates, lower order cancellations and higher revenues.“

STEP makes adding new categories incredibly quick and simple,” says Menno Vis, IT Director Ecommerce, Software Development, bol.com. “That’s a crucial capability that translates immediately into sales. STEP allows us to not only manage our product information and volumes of data, it also allows us to look forward to future scalable solutions as our company grows.”

After seeing almost immediate business results, bol.com began using STEP to roll out its newest category—baby items. Already familiar with STEP, bol.com was able to go live with the new baby product category quickly.“

So far, we are very pleased with the solution,” says Vis. “We are continuing to implement STEP in remaining categories and are building tools to automate PIM further. We are also enhancing the data model to meet future categories and will continue to work with Stibo Systems to have our requirements in the new releases of STEP.”
